Safety Requirements for Nuclear Power Plants

On 20.22.2012, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the Länder authorities responsible for nuclear licensing and supervision of nuclear power plants in operation have agreed to publish the general "Safety Requirements for Nuclear Power Plants". In addition to these safety requirements, the "Interpretations of the Safety Requirements" were published in the Federal Gazette on 10.12.2013. A revised version of the safety requirements has been available since 03.03.2015 together with the amendments to the related interpretations, published on 30.03.2015 in the Federal Gazette.

With the "Safety Requirements for Nuclear Power Plants", the existing nuclear rules and regulations were subjected to modernisation and revision. Here, the international developments and amendments that have taken place in the meantime in terms of the defence-in-depth concept were transposed into the non-mandatory guidance instruments. The "Safety Requirements for Nuclear Power Plants" comprise various national requirements and take into account international and European requirements as well as lessons learned from the accident in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plants.
