Background Information

The purpose of this Safety Guide is to provide recommendations on a generally accepted way to design a nuclear power plant so that an earthquake motion at the site will not jeopardize the safety of the plant. It also gives guidance on application of methods and procedures for seismic analysis, testing and qualification of structures and equipment so that they meet the applicable safety requirements.

DS490 is a major revision of the NS-G-1.6.

The current revision (DS490) was initiated to:

  • incorporate developments related to seismic design and qualification since the publication of NS-G-1.6 in 2003;
  • ensure consistency with the applicable requirements from SSR-2/1, SSR-3 and SSR-4;
  • provide guidance for achieving certain seismic performance namely “adequate seismic margin to avoid cliff edge effect” (in response to Requirement 17, Paragraph 5.21 and 5.21a of SSR2/1).

The new information in DS490 includes:

  • Implementation of the updated safety requirements.
  • Guidance for development of seismic design ground motion.
  • Seismic structural analysis.
  • Selection of design codes and standards.
  • Guidance for using seismic isolation systems.
  • Guidance for development of seismic design ground motion.
  • Technical recommendations for good engineering practice.
