Background Information

The document (NS-G-1.12) was first published in 2005.

The current revision (DS488) was initiated to

  • ensure coherency and consistency with all safety requirements in SSR-2/1 Rev 1 (2016)
  • comply with the long term structure of safety standards approved in 2008
  • incorporate experience on application of the documents, and the operating experience feedback from the IAEA Incident reporting systems

The scope of NS-G-1.12 remains essentially unchanged

  • Application primarily to land based stationary NPPs
  • Fuel pellets w/wo burnable absorbers, fuel rods, fuel assembly structures/components, control rods, core support structures, coolant, moderator, etc.

The new information in DS488 includes

  • All relevant safety requirements in SSR-2/1 Rev 1 and associated design recommendations
  • design considerations and specific design limits for each design disciplines
  • updated approaches to address recent technical challenges
  • design aspects of core management

Other changes

  • In line with SAR structure
  • Explicit description of design basis and design limits
  • Supplementary background in Annex
